Most student pilots get ready for the oral exam one of two expensive ways: paying a CFI by the hour to quiz them, or grinding through a giant PDF or stack of flashcards full of rote-memorization questions that don't actually sound like what a DPE asks. Neither one sticks.
Designed like flashcards, because that's how you'll actually use it
Straight from the intro page of the playbook itself:
Anyone can act as your examiner
You may not always have a CFI around to run a mock oral — so it's built like a flashcard deck. Hand it to a friend, your spouse, another student, and they can grill you cold.
Every answer is cited and hyperlinked
Each answer links straight to the FAR, Advisory Circular, PHAK, or AIM section it comes from — one tap and you're at the source. Nobody else prepping you for the oral gives you that.
Answers are exam-length, on purpose
Most answers are short and direct — exactly how you should actually answer a DPE. When more context genuinely helps you understand the concept, it's included too.
Real scenarios, not a random quiz
Cross-country planning questions build off one continuing scenario — real airports, real weights, real weather — the way a DPE actually strings questions together, not an isolated trivia list.
Tap a card. This is exactly what you'll get — 433 times over.
Real questions, real answers, real citations. No edits, no cherry-picking the easy ones.

I'm Cole Melby, a CFI and the owner of Tahoe Flight Academy in Reno, NV. This playbook is built directly from the questions DPEs have actually asked on real checkrides — organized, cited, and turned into a study tool anyone can use without needing me in the room.
Every answer is checked against the actual source — the FARs, the AIM, the Pilot's Handbook of Aeronautical Knowledge, or the relevant Advisory Circular — so you're not just memorizing a line, you can trace it back and understand why it's true.
Real feedback from student pilots
"For less than the price of one ground lesson, I have an actual oral play-by-play with great scenario-based questions at my disposal. My grounds are $100/hour and I'm tired of feeling robbed after each one. Unlike any other resource I've used, I actually enjoyed going through this and didn't fall asleep 30 minutes in."
— Nick S., Part 141 student
"The scenarios in your Playbook were very similar to the ones my DPE used. Using your Playbook definitely assisted in my comfort level as we progressed through the exam. I could grab 10–15 minute cram sessions during my day job. Great study aid."
— Tom C., passed first try
"This Playbook has helped me infinitely. Not only is it well-prepared, but the reference to the actual regulation helps so much. If you have not gotten the Playbook yet, do not wait. It is a must-have."
— Evaldo N., student pilot, Houston
"It helped me know exactly what to expect for scenario-based questions during my checkride. I passed on the first try and would definitely recommend it."
— Harry B., passed first try
"I felt kind of lost before using it. The Playbook really helped with the questions during my checkride — some were asked almost word for word."
— Alejandro P., passed first try
"The playbook was extremely helpful — I passed on my first attempt. An excellent product I would recommend to anyone."
— Geoff R., passed first try
"I'm a CFI, and I use the Playbook with my own students to help them see how concepts link together — to get them to the Application and Correlation levels of learning, not just rote memorization."
— Julia B., CFI

This is a digital product, so I can't offer a refund — but I stand behind it further than a refund ever could. Study the Playbook, take your oral exam, and if you don't pass on your first attempt, I'll personally give you a free one-on-one ground lesson to close the gap.
All I ask is a copy of your Notice of Disapproval, no deadline to claim it, since everyone's timeline from buying the Playbook to actually taking the checkride is different. This covers a first-attempt miss; it's meant to catch a real gap, not replace ongoing instruction.

Frequently asked
Is this a full ground school course?
No — this is specifically oral exam / checkride prep: DPE-style questions with cited answers. It's not written-test prep or flight training on its own, though it'll deepen your understanding either way.
I'm not local to Reno/Tahoe. Does the First-Try Guarantee still apply?
Yes — it applies to anyone who buys the Playbook, wherever you're training. If you don't pass your oral exam on the first attempt, email a copy of your Notice of Disapproval and we'll coordinate directly on scheduling your free ground lesson.
How is this different from other flashcards, books, or PDFs?
Every answer is cited to the exact regulation, Advisory Circular, or handbook page — not just a bare answer. The cross-country questions build off real, continuing scenarios instead of a randomized quiz. And it's built directly from questions actually asked by DPEs, not a generic bank.
Can I get a refund?
Because it's a digital product delivered instantly, there are no refunds — but see the First-Try Guarantee above, which is meant to back you up further than a refund would.
What format is the download, and do I need internet access?
You get a downloadable PDF you can save, print, or read on any device — the PDF and its questions and answers work fully offline, no internet needed. The online flip-book viewer is the one part that does need an internet connection, since it's hosted rather than downloaded. Each answer also links to its source document, which needs internet to open if you want to dig into the full reference.
